Lorry Crime Prevention Booklet
Road freight crime is a common problem across Europe and costs the UK economy up to £250million every year. This causes huge economic loss and disruption to the haulage industry and its drivers.
An Amber Alert has been issued by the Industry Exchange and Alerts Branch of the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA). It is based on assessed intelligence and warns of dangers and threats from serious organised criminality. It is devised with the aim of bringing about preventative or remedial action. We recommend you use this Alert to complement existing knowledge and support ongoing improvements to your business processes and procedures.
The road haulage industry is at risk of being exploited by illegal immigrants attempting to enter the UK clandestinely. HGV, LGV drivers and their employers are responsible for ensuring they do not inadvertently smuggle illegal immigrants into the UK and can be heavily fined or even face criminal proceedings if implicated. Vehicles and their trailer loads can also be targeted by other criminals for theft. It is estimated that road freight crime costs the UK economy up to £250 million every year, with many haulage companies and drivers suffering huge losses.
To help combat this problem, SOCA and the UK Border Agency (UKBA) have produced a Lorry Crime Prevention booklet that highlights the various threats. It also contains advice to help drivers stay safe and protect their vehicles and, by following the simple steps, drivers can minimise the risk of becoming victims of crime.
