New Material Recovery Centre to come to WIE

The Materials Recovery Facility’s work has begun on the construction of a state of the art recycling and composting facility on Wrexham Industrial Estate.

The Materials Recovery Facility is the result of a partnership between Waste Recycling Group and Wrexham County Borough Council that will allow the county's waste to be managed for the next 25 years. The facility will generate up to 16 new jobs and will include a recycling facility to store and bale presorted recyclables collected from the kerbside recycling rounds and bring sites.

There will also be a composting facility that will be fully enclosed to allow garden and kitchen waste as well as cardboard to be composted. A waste transfer station will see any remaining residual waste taken to suitable off site treatment facilities. Young people will also benefit from the facility as there will be an on site educational facility to enable schools and colleges to visit and learn more about recycling.

Wrexham Council has a 25 year Private Finance Initiative (PFI) with Waste Recycling Group (WRG) and the Welsh Assembly Government has allocated approximately £40 million to assist in providing the new facilities.
Total capital investment in the construction of the new infrastructure is expected to be circa £17 million, which will also include the redevelopment of both Plas Madoc and Brymbo household recycling centres. The total value of the contract is worth in excess of £340m.

Once this facility is operational residents will immediately see a difference as kitchen waste and cardboard which is generally put into the household waste can be placed in the green bin for composting meaning less waste going to landfill.

Cllr Mark Pritchard, Lead Member for Waste and the Environment, said:
"Wrexham is now leading the way in waste solutions and this is an environmentally acceptable and sustainable facility that will see residents recycling more of their waste then ever before. There will also be less waste going to landfill which is good for the environment and future generations. I look forward to the coming months and will be watching the progress of the site until its opening later next year."

David Rees, General manager of the PFI project for WRG, said:
“WRG are proud to be working in partnership with Wrexham Council in order to deliver this high profile project. The next 12 months or so will see much construction activity on the sites as we move toward commencement of full operations in 2009.”

Cllr Aled Roberts, Leader of Wrexham Council, said:
This project gives Wrexham Council the opportunity to build even further on our successes in recycling over the last two years due to the efforts of our residents. This is a major investment working with our partners in WRG which will provide us with the means to recycle cardboard and produce compost which will then be freely available to our residents as a thank you. The facility will also have a state of the art education facility to enable us to pass on our messages to our children."
